Sunset Edwardian: Bringing intention to a classic family home
San Francisco, CA

Reimagining family life within historic walls
Nestled in San Francisco’s Sunset District, this project reinterprets an early 20th-century Edwardian home for a family of four. Without altering the original footprint, we transformed a series of enclosed rooms into a light-filled, connected interior that supports the rhythms of daily life while honoring the home’s architectural character.
At the heart of the renovation is the reconfiguration of the kitchen and dining room, two formerly separate and confined spaces now united by a custom full-height bar volume. Acting as both threshold and anchor, the bar bridges the rooms to encourage conversation and connection while maintaining a sense of intimacy. This subtle but impactful spatial move gives new dimension to family gatherings and entertaining, blending openness and privacy in equal measure.

Balancing old and new
Every intervention was designed with precision and restraint, allowing historic details and modern insertions to coexist in quiet dialogue. Refined casework, crafted profiles, and a tailored palette of natural materials lend warmth and continuity throughout. The kitchen’s deep black island and blackened steel window trim balance the richness of walnut cabinetry and the soft veining of Calacatta Viola marble, establishing a composition that feels both contemporary and timeless.

A home shaped by art and memory
The homeowners, one an artist and shop owner, fill the space with their own artwork and collected objects from travels and family history. The architecture responds with subtle framing moments and quiet backdrops, creating harmony between art, material, and light. The result is a home that feels both refreshed and inevitable; modern in experience, rooted in history, and intimately attuned to family life.
