Noe Valley Perch

Perched on a hill within a dense San Francisco neighborhood this house for a family of four presented an opportunity for a holistic transformation. The initial impetus included expanding living spaces to embrace sweeping southern views, an open layout conducive to entertaining marked by an infusion of natural light, and the creation of connection with the urban and distant natural surroundings. This prompted an airy, contemporary rear expansion and a meticulous refinement of the front facade, staying true to the character of the Victorian-era neighborhood. We conceived a solution that used architecture as a bridge to connect the home’s past with the family’s contemporary and forward-thinking world view. The design outcome orchestrated a delicate interplay between traditional front spaces and modern rearward expression, with an interior deeply influenced by the family’s lifestyle, affinity to travel and openness to other cultures and aspirations. A folded-plane stair volume anchors and fills the interior with natural light and links all levels to the garden below.
