Hillside Residence: A home for modern living
San Francisco Bay Area

Light, landscape, and family life brought into alignment
Set on a sloping site in the East Bay, this project transforms an existing home through a series of thoughtful interventions that provide order for modern family life and connect the architecture with its landscape. Spaces were reconfigured to improve flow, engender a sense of calm, and to support the rhythms of the homeowners. A modest entry addition redefines the experience of being in the house, with an unexpected flood of natural light above the front door, balancing morning and afternoon sun throughout the day. The new hallway and mudroom create places for kids backpacks, shoes, sports equipment and Amazon packages, seamlessly organizing daily activities.
Nestled into the hillside, a new private walled garden and home office create a place for focus and retreat. Large sliding glass doors, brick walls and stone paving blurs the boundary between inside and out, seamlessly connecting workspace and landscape.
Together, these interventions create a cohesive home shaped by light, material, and can accommodate evolving needs over time.

A shared vocabulary of form and detail
A vocabulary of wood paneling and softly curved forms create consistency among spaces and pays homage to the home's original Deco character. Custom casework, thoughtful finishes and layered furnishings work together to create a unified vision.
